Big Printer does almost everything
Pros: Display Screen, features, value for money, quiet Cons: performance
I was hoping to get everything in one unit, especially the IFax (but Brother had mislead me on this). The unit works well and has a 400 page capacity for paper. Printing is whisper quiet, and it uses only 4W in Sleep Mode. Printing speed is slow compares to my 240C Brother Ink jet, but the features outweigh them all.

Pros: easy to use, features, design
I am happy with this printer. It looks good and works well. High Yield ink cartridges give good results. The only thing I don't like is the lengthy wait for the driver to boot up on my computer.

Outstanding In Every Respect
Pros: Display Screen, easy to use, features, Performance, value for money, design, quiet
This unit replaced an HP R80 AIO. With a $200 sale price and a $50 rebate, I scored this printer for $150. I have had it 3 months, printed 500 plus sheets of color, and I just replaced the cartridges which came with the unit.
Everyone is impressed with the quality and speed.
Setup was a charm, absolutely no connectivity issues with the wireless. Worked first time and every time since.

Great All-in-One - 6490
Pros: features, Performance, value for money Cons: paper tray - material light weight
Long time HP all-in-one printer user, but problems with new HP printer, Vista and HP PC boot errors for months. No HP solution. Researched and selected Brother 6490 for features, user ratings, quality and price. Using this all-in-one 4 weeks for scans, copies, printing various paper sizes and card reader, with no problems. Easy set-up, nice menu for setting options and good print quality including color photos & fast draft B&W. All the features I need and no PC system errors. Paper trays seem to be of light weight material, but handle with care and no signs of any problems & no paper jams. Good quality machine used 7 days a week at home for personal and volunteer work for a non-profit organization.

ink sponge
Cons: ink cartridges
Great scanner, fax but if you do a lot of printing you might consider a second mortage for the cartridges. Also a pain when one color runs low then it just stops altogher. Cartridges run out not all at once but...at different times meaning...an unexpected trip to the office supply again....and again. Often jams when using photo paper. Other than that, it's a great machine. If you do a lot of printing, especially color, you might want to consider the Kodak.

Mostly Works, but verrrry annoying
Pros: features, value for money Cons: performance, Print Quality, always failing and giving errors, freezes when error displayed, customer service horrible, my hp deskjet 810 prints better pictures.
Pls keep in mind I own an IT company and an not a novice user. I have had numerous Brother products and never had an issue. This printer however has changed my opinion entirely. Ive owned this printer now for two months and have actually cursed it out loud on numerous occasions. It spits our error messages and freezes daily. I thought perhaps I got a faulty printer, so I called customer support to give them a change to make it right. Needless to say they wasted 1hr and 30 minutes of my day until I finally hung up on them. Id rather throw it away than talk to Brother customer service. Based on their customer service I give all users a 'buyer beware'. Just pray your printer doesnt break.

This is a WorkHorse!
Pros: Display Screen, easy to use, features, Performance, value for money, design, uses less ink Cons: large footprint
I've always purchased HP printers but grew tired of purchasing so many ink carthages. This printer is truly great for businesses & folks that use lots of prints & copies. The high-yield black carthage is good for 900 pages, compared to the HP 98 black for 200 pages. This printer is the best I've had! Move over HP - here comes Brother!

Easy to use and does beautiful work!
Pros: easy to use, features, Performance, value for money, design Cons: Display Screen
I bought one of these for work, to do posters and music scores, and one at home as well. Finding any printer that did color and handled 11 X 17 (tabloid or ledger size) paper has been difficult. This machine was easy to set up, even putting it on my wireless network at home. If you print 11 X 17 sheets in full color it does use ink quickly, but that's to be expected. I think the photo color quality is a little better on my Canon inkjet, but I didn't buy this printer to print photos.
Unlike other Brother printers I've had, this one has not jammed once! The paper trays are lightly made and you have to be careful not to break the think plastic parts, but that's one of the reasons for the price point of the machine. I've scanned with it, printed and copied. I don't have the fax function enabled so I can't speak to that. Overall, it's a really nice machine that does things very few others do - and very well, and at a reasonable price.

A Very Good Machine
Pros: easy to use, features, Performance, value for money, design, quiet, large paper format
I was a big HP fan and was reluctant to buy this Brother machine. My HP was shot and I did some homework. This unit was easy to set up, worked the first time, the ink is right in front and easy to change. Networks both wired and wirelessly. Menus are very intuitive and logical. It's pretty big (22" wide), maybe too big to sit on a desk. It's quiet, well-made, has a big paper capacity and just works. I'm running it with a Mac but it would work fine in a PC application, as well. I would recommend buying a Brother!

Only Device of Its Type
Pros: Display Screen, features, value for money, tabloid size
This all-in-one works pretty well, and it's the only ledger/tabloid sized (11" x 17") device on the market as far as I know. The only disadvantages from my perspective are 1) it doesn't do duplex printing, 2) it only has two paper trays (three would be a lot better), and 3) you can't physically remove the top cover/document feeder to allow easier scanning of oversized documents (bulky books and portions of large format maps, blueprints, etc.).

Great so far
Pros: great all around unit., easy set-up., networkable is easy, fast scanner even over the network., handles large paper formats printing & scanning, 2 adjustable paper trays, easy readable menu screen on the printer display, automatically scans docs to pdf format, individule ink cartrages Cons: average printing speeds., average color, no auto duplexing(2 sided printing)
I have had HP all-in-ones in the past and they really didn't last. Always a problem with the scanner part and ADF's. Inks don't last, just was not happy with HP. I have had Brother fax machines in the past and never had a problem so I decided to try this pro model. WELL!! I am amazed at the speed of the scanning, ADF, and the amount of paper it holds... networkable too... This machine is awesome. I have to get use to the paper trays with different sizes but all in all its great. The printing speed is average. The colors are average too. Easy to use and set-up. Thanks "Brother" for stepping on HP's toes good!

have always purchased HP products in the past, but this time Brother had just brought out the MFC6490, all in one. I was not all that happy with my last 2 HP's, so I took a gamble and bought this model. AM I PLEASED!!!! A very easy set up, wireless was a snap, and for the first time I can send a multi paper fax, and walk away, knowing that there are no james or 2-3 sheets sneaking by. A little bigger than I'd like, but the performace far outweighs the size issue. The huge scanning bed is just the added plus. I would recommend this machine to everyone.
