My boss bought this a month ago for my office. The blades are bent already. I'd catagorize my level of useage as minimal, maybe 20 papers shredded a week. Now it's so jammed I can't get anything in or out - this after tryingt to shred 5 papers at once. (says it can handle 8) Makes me look bad to the boss like I'm breaking their stuff! It's almost brand new! But I'll just show them these reviews!

I purchased this shredder just a few months ago. After about ten uses, it jammed up so badly that it started to overheat and shut off. After a few days of cooling off, it did not work anymore. I removed shreds of paper stuck in between the blades, and it still didn't work. It leaves bits of paper in the blades, and once it piles up the blades jams. It suppose to be able to shred up to eight sheets but it gets stuck after only 4. I would suggest to avoid this brand (Ativa) because I hear nothing but bad things about their shredders, even the expensive ones.

Cutting blades bent after 1st use

Avoid buying this shredder. I bought it a few weeks ago, and it already broke. I used at most 5 sheets, less than the stated maximum of 5 sheets. Alrady, the blades are bent, paper just rolls around the wheels and the shredder is smoking. This product is a waste of money.

Every time I wanted to use it I had to re-seat the top part to get the safety switch to line up. Then it died after about a month when i.d. theft occured and we had to shred a couple of boxes of checks. It overheated then paper jammed into the teeth and it hasn't been the same since. Wish I would've went with something else. I figured "you get what you pay for" and I went middle of the road money-wise, but this one was one bad deal!

It's Working for Me

I've had the shredder for about a month. I just finished shredding over twenty years of old tax records, four big boxes full. I've also shredded a couple of credit cards and several CDs/DVDs. I initially had the same problem (dead on arrival) expressed by several others. I examined the unit and found a microswitch on the back of the motor housing that is activated when the housing is placed on the basket -- a safety feature, no doubt. It's very easy to misalign this switch, in which case the shredder won't work. Unfortunately, there is little mention of this problem in the manual. I'll bet everyone that had an issue with initial failure had this switch misaligned. The basket is somewhat flimsy and bends easily. This may add to the misalignment problem mentioned above. It's working great for me. Considering its low price, I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it's far exceeded my expectations.

I purchased this shedder and had the exact same problems as the other reviewers. This is junk. I purchased this in June and haven't even had to empty the basket yet, so it certainly wasn't from over use. I believe that I shredded a credit card and it ruined the blades. I must admit that when I contacted Ativa, they were very helpful and did promise to send me an Office Depot credit for the amount of my purchase. They even helped me find the receipt, which I had thrown out. So, they do stand behind the warranty. It was not worth the hassle though, so while I will continue to buy from OD, I won't be buying any Ativa Shredders.

Bought the first one on sale. First mistake. Jammed up and gear broke in first week but I made the mistake of breaking the seal. Bought another one because I liked the features. Second mistake. Cutters jammed full of paper after a week. Expected Ativa to honor warranty. Third mistake. Seems you are not supposed to shred envelopes. Who'd a thunk it? Seems that the glue on the envelopes causes the paper to stick, jamming and bending the blades. Looks to me like the damaged blades line up exactly with the credit card slot. Shouldn't have shredded those 2 credit cards I guess. Stupid ole me.

Our first machine that we ordered, broke within a day. Office Depot sent us a replacement machine which lasted about a month. I called Ativa to see about the 1 year warranty---BUT since we used the shredder to shred a "few" ENVELOPES- the warranty is not valid. According to the "Owners Manual" which no one reads, the manual states not to shred envelopes. So whatever!!! $70 bucks down the drain!
Now I am purchasing a FELLOWES Shredder!

I bought this because it was on sale for $39.99. I got it home, plugged it in and nothing. It wouldn't even turn on. I returned it and exchanged it for another one of the same model. I bought one and it was shipped to us, plugged it in didn't work from the start. Called and they shipped another we sent the first one back. First three days of use, were great. However, day four it jammed and wouldn't work other than making an awful noise! After trying two of these, wouldn't try this model again if it was free!

I used this shredder 1 time for about 3 minutes. Turned it off and it never turned back on again. I had reservations about buying the Ativa brand since there were so many bad reviews on them but it was on sale for $39.99 so I thought what they heck!! I learnt my lesson. I returned it to the store and bought the Fellowes Poweshred instead. So far so good!!
